i love so deeply this stupid dumb Butthead franchise: the drama is always flat, the narratives are bare, ekin cheng looks and acts like a stick figure, whatever action there is is just a blur of bodies without proper impact, but y’know what? For now, it’s mine. It hasn’t yet been championed by the hordes of blu-ray buyers who let physical media distributors dictate their taste, nor has it been celebrated by the arthouse frequenters that sit in their local theaters packed with yuppies, watching revivals of movies that they didn’t work to discover. No, this is a franchise you have to go to chinatown to find, you’ve gotta wade through the bootleg DVDs and find the covers of shirtless…

As Hong Kong's return to China loomed over the city, the fear of change was present. Young and Dangerous 4 echoes that sentiment. We see a more drastic shift in leadership as a new head steps in to Hung Hing. More than ever, the internal strife between members of the same triad become apparent, as external forces seek to shape their society.

Hard to see 20 years later why these films had a bad reputation in some quarters. Today they feel as alive, sprawling and stylish as the best of golden age Hongkong cinema. A quirky prolongation rather than the sad end of the heroic bloodshed tradition.

This one isn't as good a genre film as part 2 or 3. It takes at least one step too many in soap opera territory, the plot lacks clear internal motivation, and there isn't a standout action set piece like the street brawl in part 3. But as a pre-takover-paranoia film it is even more interesting than its predecessors. Not only in the openly political allusions in the end during the election, but even more…

Part four of the infamous Young and Dangerous series feels a bit smaller.in scope, which is a shame. It's almost like watching a spin-off or filler episode, rather than a film that has earned its place in the main franchise. Jordan Chan's meatier role is the biggest plus, but those who yearn for some all-out gang wars should probably lower their expectations.

When the leader of the Hung Hing Triad comes to pass Ho Nam and Ho Bun travel to Thailand to find Yang, the former leader's younger brother. When they are gone, others see their chance to upset the power balance, hoping to come out better in the end. When they finally locate Yang, the three of them return…

Entertaining. Young and Dangerous 4 continues to show the “no pain no gain” experience of our protagonists with some unexpected twists.

After Smartie passed away in Young and Dangerous 3, Ho Nam started a new romance with Yan in this movie, yet their relationship is quite poorly written.

  • Review by Fawkins ★★★

A few interesting subplots sprinkled in (the classroom scenes are all compelling) to what is largely a rehash of the second film, only this time Anthony Wong is dripped out in suits and cut his hair short. I figured having a bit more time between movies might lead to something more hashed out than this but it seems like it was really just losing footing off a creative hot streak
